School of Physics and Technology

The School of Physics Science in University of Jinan was founded in March 2011, and was renamed the School of Physics and Technology in University of Jinan in November 2011. The predecessor is the Department of Physics in the School of Science in University of Jinan. The undergraduate programs are Physics (Science), Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering (Science), and New Energy Science and Engineering (Engineering). There are more than 900 undergraduate students in the school. The school offers first-level discipline Master degree program in Physics, and second-level discipline Master degree programs in Theoretical Physics, Particle and Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics, and Optics. There are more than 30 graduate students in the school.

The School comprises 74 teaching & research staffs, including 1 national prominent teacher, 2 Taishan Scholars of Shandong Province Overseas Distinguished expert, 1 Distinguished Teaching Professor of the universities in Shandong Province, 1 Teaching Excellence Award winner in University of Jinan and 3 Youth Education Experts. There are 12 professors, 25 Associate professor; 31 Doctors, and 15 Master Instructors in the staffs. Our staffs enjoy a good reputation on dedication, teaching and fostering.

The school is grouped into 4 research and teaching centers, which are the Department of Physics, Department of photoelectricity, the University Physics Teaching Center and the University Physics Experimental Center. These centers not only service for undergraduate and graduate teaching tasks of the school, but also support for the teaching mission of physical theory courses and the experimental lessons for all university students. The equipments for teaching and research are worth more than 30 million CNY and the laboratory areas are more than 7,000 square meters, which satisfies the needs of teaching and research.

The school has built the Institute of UJN-Weishi Lighting Technology, the Institute of UJN-Winner Institute of Particle Technology Research and the Institute of Optoelectronic Materials. The advanced computer rooms as well as students practice base and employment base cooperated with more than ten enterprises and schools can well meet the demands of student internships and other practical teaching programs.

The main research fields in the school are Computational materials science, Nano spin electronic materials and devices, Optoelectronic materials and devices, Laser technology and application, Particle physics, and Quantum communication and quantum information. During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, the school undertook 4 national projects and 11 provincial level projects. At the same period, impressive 137 papers have been published in the core journals of above, among which 89 papers are included by SCI, EI, and 5 of them are patented. Currently, the school has 14 National Natural Science Foundation projects, more than 20 Provincial Funds. The total research funding is more than 9 million CNY. There are 62 research papers have been included by SCI, EI or ISTP in 2013.

The students own strong leaning culture and have many colorful extra-curricular activities. The school own high employment rate and high passing rate on the examination for postgraduate. There are more than 27 percentage graduates passing the examination for Postgraduates in 2013, and most of them were enrolled by "985 or 211 Engineering" universities. In addition, the staff and students got many excellent achievements in these years including National College Students Challenge Cup Competition, National Physics Students Teaching Competition, and Shandong Province University Students Competition of Physical Innovation Skills, etc.

Introduction of the undergraduate programs

1. Physics (Science)

Physics is one of the most fundamental subjects in human science and technology development. Newton, Einstein etc, are the most famous scientists in the world. Physical phenomena are most common in human activities and the knowledge of physics is most widely used in reality.

The study in physics major will let the students get the main idea on physics theory and methods, get a good training in scientific research, with a strong mathematical foundation and experimental skills as well as a strong innovative spirit and practical ability. Therefore, students can engage in scientific and technological research, teaching and management in physics and the related high-tech science and technology field. The students can also go on their studies to obtain the master degree in physics and relevant disciplines .

The Bachelor of Science degree will be granted.

Main Courses: General physics (Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Electromagnetism, Optics, Atomic Physics), General Physical Experiment, Methods of Mathematical Physics, Theoretical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Solid State Physics, Modern Physical Experiment, etc.

2. Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering (Science)

The 21st century will be the century of light. In the modern human activities, lasers, optical fibers, etc, have been indispensable.

The students in this major could be fostered to have the modern science consciousness, firm theoretical foundation, wide range of knowledge, and strong innovation ability. The students will become the applied talents who adapt to the modern informational society with high developing speed, work as researchers in the technology fields involved the optical engineering, the optical communication, the processing of image and information, etc, and work in the product design and manufacture, technology development and application, operational management in the related fields. They also can go to postgraduate program in the related majors to continue their education.

The Bachelor of Science degree will be granted.

3. New Energy Science and Engineering (Engineering)

The energy problem is the world's largest hot spot at present. Energy is the most basic material for human survival. Due to the non-renewable energy resource (such as coal, oil, etc.,) are depleting, the development and utilization of new energy turns to be the biggest issue relating to human survival. New energy sources include solar energy, wind energy , geothermal energy, tidal energy, nuclear power, biomass energy and other green clean energy.

Facing to new energy industry and establishing in the national 12th Five-Year development plan, according to the development trend of energy field and the needs of the development of national economy, the major of new energy science and engineering fosters the interdisciplinary senior engineering and technical talents who could work in the field of engineering technology (including development and research, engineering design, optimizing operation and production management) related to the new energy filed such as wind energy and solar energy, and the professional talents who have stronger engineering practice and innovation ability, which could satisfy the demands of professional talents for the national strategic emerging industry development in the new energy field for the teaching, scientific research, technological development, engineering application, and operating management. They also could enter postgraduate program in the related majors to continue their education.

The Bachelor of Engineering degree will be granted.
