On January 9, 2016, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Communist Party of China and State leaders Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, Liu Yunshan and Zhang Gaoli attended the conference and presented awards. The project entitled A set of fabrication technology of cement based piezoelectric composite monitoring materials, devices and applications in concrete engineering hosted by Professor Cheng Xin of our university, won the second prize of National Technological Invention Award. This is the second time for our university to receive this highest award of the nation in science and technology since 2010.

Professor Cheng Xin and his team fabricated the monitoring materials and devices through the composite technology of cement and piezoelectric ceramic. They studied the material composition, spatial structure and distribution of electric field, interface control mechanism of the monitoring materials, and the mechanical-electro-acoustic model of the devices as well. Through more than ten years of research and engineering application, they built a set of fabrication and engineering application technology of monitoring materials and devices owning independent intellectual property rights, and realized the real-time and active/passive monitoring to concrete engineering by constructing cement based piezoelectric online monitoring system, which provided the technical guarantee for large-scale concrete structures. The research findings has been widely used in some important monitoring engineering of critical infrastructures in our country, which provided guarantee for the great concrete engineering, and received significant economic and social benefits.

2016 National Awards for Science and Technology (S&T) were presented to 279 projects, 7 scientific workers and 1 international organization, including 2 National Top S&T Awards; 42 National Natural Science Awards with 1 first prize and 41 second prizes; 66 National Technological Invention Awards with 3 first prizes and 63 second prizes; 171 National S&T Progress Awards with 2 special prizes, 20 first prizes and 149 second prizes; International S&T Cooperation Awards to 5 foreign scientists and 1 international organization.
